It appears that the eaglets are following their instincts and are learning to feed and fend for themselves. It will be interesting (and a contribution to the fund of knowledge about urban Bald Eagles) to try to pinpoint several milestones: the day that adults are last observed bringing food to the nest, the last time the eaglets are seen returning to the nest at night, and the final sighting of adult and young eagles at or near the nest tree. The adults may depart earlier or later than the young, though I have read that they young may tend to hang around after the parents disappear. Yet, I believe that the young birds are known to wander farther north than the adults. What we learn will be specific to this nest, and may differ from what is known about eagles nesting further to the north and south. Computer access has been a bit of a problem, but I think all is finally OK. I updated my Blog this morning, and have embedded Mike Fossler's great slide show at the top of the page. Enjoying the change in seasons-- it is so different to see people out in short sleeves when the temperature climbs to 55 degrees! I apologize for the calls that have gone unanswered and my tardy attention to the many e-mails (interspersed with spam that is now missing the filters in my laptop). Many people want to know what they can do to promote and assure that the Pembroke Pines eagle sanctuary becomes a reality. The most important thing will be to support Mayor Ortis's commitment to preservation. While funds may be scarce or even unavailable, he wishes to devote any available resources to the project. As a remote member of the Mayor's steering committee, I will try to keep abreast of events and issues, and keep everyone informed. Up here, we are hearing about the big fire in the Everglades that closed down Alligator Alley. The very worst thing that could happen to our local eagle habitat would be to see it evaporate in flames. Fire danger must be a primary concern, and hopefully something will be done to mitigate the threat of fire to the primary nest tree as well as other large Australian Pines that serve as roosting sites and potential secondary nest locations. If they are destroyed, the only way to keep the eagles in Pembroke Pines would be to construct an artificial nesting platform. Be sure to visit the Hancock Wildlife Channel Eagle Nest Discussion group . When I get a chance, I will try to upload photos showing the development of the chicks from the day that Hope first poked her head above the nest rim, to my final views of them flying freely. So many of you have great photos to share with other eagle watchers from all over North America. It is interesting to see how the Florida breeding season is so far ahead of the others! I'm glad you are able to keep up with things through the site. We'll try to get the milestones tied down...I wonder if #1 has occurred? I haven't seen nest feeding or eating in a while, but we need to talk to everyone that has been by the nest lately for their input. The fires are a worry, of course. We have been spared the odor and dingy skies due to a really strong east wind that has been around as long as the fire. I'm not sure how much longer it is forecast to remain. I talked to Al this morning at the nest and offered to help him in any way I can with the steps to protect our nest tree from fire danger. We have also seen nests with two eaglets fledge with one adult and one young going first and then one adult and the remaining young leave a little later. This was with a young eagle which was reluctant to go.\" Thanks for the info, Barb. I probably remembered wrong. It seems logical that the parents would stay while there are chicks present. Also, maybe one chick was more closely attached to one adult in the second case you mentioned. Interestingly, after these chicks fledged, several times we saw one chick return to the nest with one adult bringing food. The other came from a different direction, suggesting that the first may have accompanied the parent on a hunting/fishing foray. Let's see what happens. In prior years the eaglets fledged at an average age of 75.5 days (Median ~73 days), about 7 days after branching or helicoptering was first reported. They often flap and hop for a couple of weeks before fledging. \"Helicoptering\" is characterized by remaining aloft for at least 2 or three wing beats. Today Honor did helicopter but no branching has been reported so far. Glory is asking \"How's the weather up there?\" Nest-mate Glory is submissive, which is a good sign as it minimizes fighting and chance of injury. Neither adult was in sight during my watch. Such a camera would require funding and acquisition of dedicated bandwidth. We understand that electrical power may be available from a box only about 150 feet from the nest. If funding were obtained and local permissions were granted, a formal application must be processed. FWC requires application for an eagle nest cam to be made 90 days before intended installation, if it is placed within the 330 foot buffer zone around the nest. Of course, a camera view is no substitute for the real thing, but it can provide valuable information about the welfare and habits of the birds. Interestingly, Barbara Walker has informed us about an Osprey cam that has just begun operating at a nest in Pinellas County. So far, the only bird to appear has been a Loggerhead Shrike! You might wish to check out the Osprey cam at this link and click on \"Live Camera.\" Other links describe a project to involve 4th and 5th grade students: Participation in monitoring an Osprey nest is intended to accomplish three things. 1) To get children in the habit of observing the wildlife around them on a regular basis, 2) To create an interest in and to teach 'citizen science' methods of observations and collecting data and 3) To instill in children a sense of the value of volunteerism, particularly as it relates to the environment. Participating 4th and 5th grade classes will receive Citizen Scientist booklets to record their observation data. For enrichment children are encouraged to visit Honeymoon Island Nature Center and the Osprey Trail at Honeymoon Island. Data will be summarized and posted before the end of the school year. The students will track the following pair/nest events: * Nest Building * Mating * Egg laying * Incubation * Hatching * Fledging * Departure On a more somber note, Barb also provided this information about persecution of Ospreys, from Rob Bierregaard of the Biology Department at UNC-Charlotte: Regulars to the migration pages know that we have lost all 4 young Ospreys that tried to overwinter in the Dominican Republic to gunshots. That's a pretty scary statistic, given the number of Ospreys that pass through or winter there. Stirred to action, working with the Hispaniola Ornithological Society, I received a start-up grant from the International Osprey Foundation to do some environmental education down there. Here's a link to the first TV ad that will be run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81cNlNMAEVU The message is that Ospreys eat fish, not chickens, so don't shoot them. The big problem for Ospreys down there is that everyone has chickens and many think that any raptor is a threat to their chickens. My good friends at the Peregrine Fund have offered to receive contributions to support this effort and get the money down to the D.R. So if you're interested in helping spread the word down there, you can send a contribution, earmarked for Osprey Conservation/Dominican Republic, to: The Peregrine Fund 5668 West Flying Hawk Lane Boise, Idaho 83709","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-Cam-Considerations-td3554248.html","images":0},{"id":"7576505","topic":"7576505","order":1,"title":"Developers interested in land at Pines eagle nest site","author":"Sally","date":"2022-03-31T20:54:03.579000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"Please see this link about developers interested in land at the Pines eagle nest site. https://miami.cbslocal.com/2022/03/31/pembroke-pines-nesting-land-developers-eagles/ Fingers crossed they will be able to save the land. The female (Jewel) was roosting quietly in the tall tree at the corner of Pines 7 208th, and the two eaglets were quite active in the nest. They are just about one month old and there is still a noticeable difference between the first-hatched eaglet (P Piney 26) and the smaller and still downy younger sibling (P Piney 27). After more than an hour I decided to call it quits, though Luis and Lazaro were still on watch. I was walking to my car when a couple of families with young children stopped and asked about the eagles. I returned to the nest area and helped them see the roosting female as well as the eaglets. Then, just as I was leaving, my good deed went unpunished, as Jewel suddenly propelled from her perch and flew out to pluck some fresh leaves from an Australian Pine (remember they do not have needles-- they are twigs covered by tiny leaves, but also are aromatic and oily). As she flew over my head to return to the nest I captured a series which made me happy to be an eagle lover. It was an immature Bald Eagle, probably in late second year or early third year plumage, approaching the age of 2 years. If from a local nest this means it hatched in early 2018: It differs from the late third year plumage of this eagle (approaching four years of age) which I photographed at the nest site on December 20: However, because of individual variation, there is no fixed sequence of the maturation process, which may proceed to adult plumage in as few as 3-4 or up to 5.5 years. Generalizations about age of an individual eagle may not always apply. On December 25 I photographed another immature eagle in west Miramar, about 1.8 miles SE of the PP nest. It appears to be a younger (Late first year or early second year, about one year of age) bird, probably not the same as the one I saw today. Yet the top of its head may have some white, which usually does not develop this early. Note that the trailing edges of its wings are irregular, as only a few juvenile flight feathers (remiges) are being replaced by shorter third year feathers with white markings. This causes juveniles to have a noticeable bulge in the wings near the body: In the Chapel Trail bird, all of its secondary remiges are of uniform length like those of adults and are partially white, while the primaries are all dark. An early second year bird (age 1-2 years) would be expected to have an irregular trailing edge to its wings as the longer juvenile feathers are replaced by third year remiges. Note the uniform trailing edge in the (poor) flight photo and also the white patches in the secondaries: In this cropped enlargement of its head, the eyes and bill show that the iris is turning yellowish and there is yellow at the base of the upper mandible. The lower mandible appears to be nearly yellow. Also, the top of this bird's head is a bit pale, a trait of third year birds:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/DEC-25-amp-27-Immature-eagles-in-territory-of-nesting-pair-td7575465.html","images":5},{"id":"7573473","topic":"7573473","order":1,"title":"Both Eaglets in the Nest Tree Sat AM","author":"KellyHeffernan Proj Perch","date":"2014-04-05T14:51:44-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"To the Eagle Forum - There was a confirmed sighting of both eaglets in the nest tree this morning, Saturday. Both chicks appeared to try to get positioned for a rest, but had some disagreements with each other about where they wanted to be. Two had been seen in the nest early in the morning but one was missing around 9:00-10:00 AM. Phil had photographed the female \"helicoptering\" a few days earlier. He first observed this on May 13, when this eaglet was about 60 days old. Our records at this nest over the years have included seven accounts of the eaglets' ages when first seen \"helicoptering\" (hovering briefly over the nest) The median age was 71 days and the average was 73 days (range 60-80 days of age). On May 21 the female was 68 days old: This morning (May 22) Phil Martin found only the male eaglet in the nest: I arrived at the nest at 7:55 AM just as Phil was departing and also found only one eaglet. It is the male, based upon difference in gape and also the fact that the larger female has light feathers around her face and throat. No adults were seen. As I was walking away at about 8:30 the adult male flew to the nest and may have dropped a prey item, then continued on to roost nearby on the tall pine to the east of the nest: After spending only 5-6 minutes at the roost, the eagle flew off to the east and then turned back out of sight towards the west:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/May-22-Female-eaglet-fledged-on-May-21-td7575560.html","images":10},{"id":"7574237","topic":"7574237","order":1,"title":"Eagles sighted 11/30/2015","author":"Maria Rosa Drake","date":"2015-11-30T08:37:35.635000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2015–2016","text":"One eagle was in the dead pine tree East of the nest; another eagle was in the nest. 6:48am","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Eagles-sighted-11-30-2015-td7574237.html","images":0},{"id":"7574109","topic":"7574109","order":1,"title":"Deerfield Beach Eaglets - 2015","author":"Hellene Grundler","date":"2015-04-30T21:47:51.583000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Deerfield-Beach-Eaglets-2015-td7574109.html","images":2},{"id":"7574111","topic":"7574109","order":2,"title":"Re: Deerfield Beach Eaglets - 2015","author":"KellyHeffernan Proj Perch","date":"2015-05-01T09:18:08-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hellene - What beautiful pictures!! Half my photos are of that tree!! But, when it blew to the side, I could see the parent so clear. I thought that about the baby too - maybe something happened to him. Last year, I took a shot of the parent (I can't tell the male from the female) chasing off a vulture who got too close to the nest - so I hope that wasn't the case with this baby. I hope he is ok. And, I wonder why there is only one; in past years, there have been 2, and even 3 in 2010. I was there for about half an hour at 12:30. I studied all my photographs carefully and there is no sign whatsoever of the baby. The parent stayed there the entire time. Usually, I just see her come, feed them, then leave and sit on the tree to the left, or by those stick-trees to the right. I hope someone sees the baby tomorrow. I love this forum! I'm glad I found it.
