At first it appeared that the female (Jewel) was alone on the nest: However, both adults ( left to right, Jewel and Pride) were there, apparently rearranging sticks. We think that the first egg will be deposited within the next day or two. So far Jewel has spent time deep in the nest as if \"broody.\" This behavior usually indicates preparation for egg-laying. When that happens, we usually expect the female to continuously remain low in the nest until finished, perhaps out of sight, given the large amount of nesting material which has been added this season. The pair had a friendly interaction: Jewel flew up to the support branch as Pride continued to work on the nest. Later, at about 10:30 AM, Phil found Pride looking out of the nest while Jewel was down low. Her bill may be seen through the rim of the nest, just above his watermark. The lighting was poor, but I did not see the brown tip on the tail feather of the perched eagle....so I assume that it was the female. A yellow truck from the State Dept of Transportation arrived with 2 very nice guys in it who came over and asked me what I was looking at. I explained and they said they were by to begin cleaning out the large drains in the swale area covered by metal grates. They said that is their duty and no one else in this area has this job. They felt the large truck and often needed back hoe might be disruptive now at this critical time so they said they would continue working in other locations and return there no sooner than June. They were somewhat surprised they had not been informed about the nest, but pleased to have found out and delayed the work. Ken, if you feel that follow-up is necessary, you have the DOT contacts. These guys were very interested in the eagles, fisherman, naturalists and assured me that they would make sure that no disturbance would occur until after nesting season.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Nest-watch-Thur-7-Jan-2010-td4269236.html","images":0},{"id":"4269494","topic":"4269236","order":2,"title":"Re: Nest watch, Thur, 7 Jan 2010","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2010-01-07T18:56:29.406000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"I forwarded Trisha's note to David Bogardus of FDOT, with copies to members of Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee. He landed in the dead trees to the W., but he was back a bit and my camera kept focusing on the closest trees so none of my pics worked out. After a few minutes, he flew away and was gone for about 10 minutes. When he came back to the area, he visited the nest. I was not able to see if he brought something to eat or not. After about a 5 minute visit, he flew to a branch above the nest and looked down. I'm pretty sure it was the male because of the brown tips on the tail feathers. He flew away from the branch above the nest and I could not see where he went. It was not to the dead trees. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and a newly formed political committee want to bring bald eagles under their wings following an announcement in late May that charter high school proponents changed their preferred venue from the Marco YMCA to the property known as Tract K, where eagles reside. The Conservancy is urging the Marco Island City Council to approve a bald eagle protection ordinance. Meanwhile, citizens are banding together to try to get voters to decide the future of Tract K on Nov. 2. If all else fails, they will buy the land and protect it without government help, residents said. State and federal protection weakened when the bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2008. “It’s still a fragile population. We want to ensure it doesn’t become imperiled again,” said Amber Crooks of the Conservancy. Marco has two active nests, one of which is on Tract K, city environmental specialist Nancy Richie said. Statewide, that might not be of much concern, Crooks said, but on Marco, if you lose one, that’s a big difference. The proposed school could bring 300 to 600 students to Tract K, estimated Jane Watt, president of the Marco Island Discovery Center. School activity likely would cause the eagles to abandon their nests, Crooks said. Gerald Swiacki and Carl Way, as well as other Marco residents, created a political committee and separate foundation, Marco Eagle Sanctuary, to put the fate of the vacant 11.6-acre Tract K in the hands of voters. They’ll have to scramble to get it on the ballot by the Aug. 24 deadline, however. Tract K was deeded to the Collier County School District by the island developers, Deltona Corp., at a cost of $10. Many Marco residents and city leaders believe that the developers intended to set the land aside for a school. There are no deed restrictions, however. The land is too small and of little use to the district, Collier schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson said. Watt requested the land at no cost. “I can tell you that will not happen,” Thompson said. When Crooks and dozens of residents descended on a council meeting in July to plead for eagle protection, council members said they were in the wrong place. They should talk to the School Board, council members Jerry Gibson and Frank Recker said. “A school does involve the consideration of every council member,” Marco resident Frances Enman said. “Free speech belongs to all of us.” School Board member Pat Carroll, who once opposed selling Tract K, said at a recent candidates’ forum that it belongs under city ownership. Regardless of who owns it, Crooks said council has a right and responsibility to protect the eagles. Citing Bonita Springs and Lee County bald eagle protection ordinances, Crooks said an ordinance gives the city a say over project design and mitigation. “Local governments have a nexus now to review these projects,” she said. If the Collier School Board approves the charter application this fall, the planning board and council will review any residential zoning change. State laws prohibit construction or disturbance within 330 feet of a bald eagle’s nest. Initially, Ulgonda Kirkpatrick, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s bald eagle coordinator, maintained that regulations would prevent the school from building near Marco’s nest for five consecutive seasons. However, in an e-mail to the Daily News on Wednesday, Kirkpatrick said an eagle disturbance permit could allow building the school closer if mitigation and other conditions are met. “Each application is reviewed on an individual basis,” she said. That concerns Crooks and others. Watt has said the charter school leaders would protect the eagles to enhance the school’s eco-friendly curriculum. Cheryl Brownstein, who lives near Tract K, is among those calling for protection of the land by creating a passive park without play areas. “It would be a place for quiet reflection or meditation,” Brownstein said. Portions would be closed during nesting season, proponents said. The political committee is seeking approval from voters for the city to purchase the property for up to $3.5 million and create the sanctuary. They will be hard-pressed to meet the city’s criteria, City Clerk Laura Litzan said. The city must hold two advertised hearings of the ordinance, but currently there is only one Aug. 16 council meeting scheduled. There are 1,500 signatures needed on the petition that the city has yet to approve, and an Aug. 24 deadline with the Collier County Supervisor of Elections for submittal. Way is concerned whether the city staff is stalling. Alan Gabriel, the attorney from the Weiss-Serota law firm representing the city, denied the petition because it lacked an affidavit signed by five committee members and had imprecise ordinance language. Aware of ongoing negotiations between the city and the superintendent for the city to purchase Tract K, including the proposal for a two-year, first-option-to-buy agreement, Way has other concerns. “They better not purchase this just to hand it over to the school in a back-room deal,” he said. If voters don’t get their say, Way said the foundation will seek donations from around the world to purchase Tract K. He said he would support an appropriately sized high school, but the current proposal is grandiose for Marco’s and Collier’s needs. © 2010 Scripps Newspaper Group — Online -- Ken Schneider Miramar, Florida & North Aurora, Illinois Web site: http://www.rosyfinch.com Local Eagle Nest: http://www.rosyfinch.com/BaldEagleNest.html Sandia Crest Birding Forum: http://rosyfinch.com/Rosy-FinchFORUM.html Blog: http://blog.rosyfinch.com Photos: http://flickr.com/photos/rosyfinch \"Openness to the natural world and our response to it lie at the core of what we do and why we do it.\" (Fr. Barry Heimlich, Bonnie Ross, and Robert Schwartztol are its directors, with Barry Heimlich as its president. The corporation, whose website is pembrokepineseaglewatch.com has the immediate goal of establishing live streaming high definition video of the bald eagle nest on its website. Installation of the camera, solar powered camera and wireless internet hookup is scheduled to take place after the eagles have departed the nest area this year and before they return to the nest in the fall. All the elements of this challenging project are already in place - a plan, selection of the necessary equipment and system design, partnership with a highly qualified and experienced systems integrator (JES Hardware Solutions), partnership with West Broward High School's science department which will receive the wireless video signal and transmit it to the internet, and partnerships with the City of Pembroke Pines, Broward County, Broward Schools, other local and state agencies, and the South Florida Audubon Society. The project team led by Barry Heimlich includes Ken Schneider who was one of the first persons to find the nest, Doug Young who is the president of South Florida Audubon Society, Nancy Boyle who is volunteering to help set up the website, Norman Alford who is head of the science department at West Broward High School and this year's Florida Teacher of the Year, and James Sessions of JES Hardware Solutions. An educational and research program revolving around these eagles' behavior will be planned for West Broward High School and other Broward public schools. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis and the city commission enthusiastically support the project and have established the Pembroke Pines Eagle Sanctuary on the property where the eagle nest is located. I'm sure there are spots where a scope would work well for you and be \"legal.\" As for photos I really only have a lens powerful enough for IF(in flight) shots anyway. They go to the field a lot for nest building materials and will also be going back and forth over the road more when they feed their young. I really enjoy watching them and won't let this DOT set back stop me. For I while I was angry and stayed away, but I realized I was hurting my own passion for this experience and not DOT. I wish we could work something out and still hold out hope that could happen. I certainly won't spend the time there that I used to, and will not be involved in reminding watchers of the rules....the signs are clearly posted now. Let the police deal with that! I really think you would still enjoy being there and hope to see you soon. The eagles are still so magnificent and really look healthy. Ken is also exploring if a nest cam would be feasible...you can imagine there is quite an expense as well as a lengthy permitting process. I didn't see the sidewalk drilling, and that's the side of the street I park on. That would be insane if they allowed them to drill there at this time, insane. An adult was deep in the nest. The sky was gray and gusts of northerly winds caused the nest tree to sway considerably. The high winds and driving rain which accompanied the cold front the afternoon before did not cause any visible damage. The estimated hatch day for the first egg was March 8th, based upon ground observations of of changes in behavior between January 28 and February 1. Luis saw the female moving about as if tending to a hatchling and believed that an eaglet may have arrived yesterday (March 6). As I watched the nest I saw the adult rise up and indeed its head movements suggested that this may be the case. We would expect her to be \"tenting\" a bit higher in the nest to shelter the eaglet and also continue to incubate the remaining egg(s). However it is very difficult to see activities in the nest. Within an hour the clouds disappeared and the sky was blue. The male (Pride) flew in at 8:20 AM and roosted in the tree on the corner of 208th and Pines: He flew to the nest and exchanged incubation duties, as almost immediately the female (Jewel) flew into one of the favored perches in the same tree: Jewel flew off and disappeared to the southwest at 8:35 AM: She reappeared unexpectedly from the east in about 5 minutes, and spent quite a while preening: Jewel flapped her wings to keep her balance as she scratched her chin: Then she started calling... ...and promptly dropped down to grasp an outer branch of the Australian Pine: She attempted to break off a green twig... ...and succeeded! As soon as Jewel launched she transferred the leafy* clump to her talons... ...and flew to deposit it on the nest: Just as I was leaving at 9:00 AM, Jewel flew off to gather more greeney. Luis reported that both eagles were bringing in green branches. We have seen this happen more often when there are eaglets in the nest. They may serve as an insect repellant. * Australian Pine seeds look like small pine cones but they are not true pines and do not have needles-- they are actually thin branches covered by tiny scaly leaves.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/MARCH-7-Eaglet-may-have-hatched-td7575934.html","images":19},{"id":"2586075","topic":"2586075","order":1,"title":"wildlife photographer / nest watching help needed?","author":"gconstantakis","date":"2009-04-04T15:11:22.966000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I am planing to take photographs of the Bald Eagles Sunday April 5th. Most disturbing was when we walked over the median, I saw a minivan parked in the pull off area where we cannot park and saw no one. Then I saw a man and two young boys coming up from the fence (closest to the Australian Pines) - I wish I had my phone to snap a photo of them.
