Yet, it surprises some people to learn that, in the lower 48 states, breeding Bald Eagles are most numerous in Florida and Minnesota. In 1990 there were 535 breeding pairs in Florida, and 437 in Minnesota. The number of Florida breeding pairs rebounded rapidly to 1,102 pairs in 2001, then plateaued at 1,133 in 2005. In the meantime, Minnesota's population climbed slowly at first, to 681 pairs in 2001, then shot up to 1,312 pairs in 2005, surpassing the Florida population. This US Fish and Wildlife Service graph illustrates the recovery of breeding Bald Eagles in the lower 48 states since DDT was banned in the early 1970s: In an earlier post , I described why the numbers of Bald Eagles in the more northern of the lower 48 states increase during summer and early autumn, due not only to newly fledged eaglets, but to the influx of more southern eagles. The Florida birds perform an interesting \"reverse\" northward migration after the breeding season. It is hypothesized that this contrary behavior is caused by another sort of \"migration,\" namely the vertical movement of the eagles' main food source. As Florida's lakes heat up, the fish seek cooler temperatures in deeper water. Radio tagging of Florida eagles has shown that many follow the cooler water into the northeastern coastal states. Chesapeake Bay is a popular summer and fall gathering place for the Florida population.Immature birds tend to wander more widely than adults, with some even ending up in Canada. Conversely, North America's northernmost Bald Eagles move south with the approach of winter, seeking open water as the larger lakes freeze up. Alaskan eagles are, on average, heavier than those in Florida and have longer wings. I photographed this one in Soldotna, Alaska, along the Kenai River: We have a particular interest in Bald Eagles, as we have been involved in protecting a recently discovered nest in our south Florida neighborhood. During the first week of October, 2011, Mary Lou and I were pleased to see that both members of the pair had returned to the nest: They were already rearranging the nest materials: On October 12, 2011, I photographed one of the pair at sunrise, flying from the nest area in the general direction of the largest lake in our subdivision: On October 16, 2011, the female was sitting high on the nest... ...while her mate (judging by its slimmer build and slightly smaller size) roosted in a nearby Australian Pine: We first became aware of the local pair of eagles on December 4, 2007, when I photographed them mating on the rooftop of a house just across the lake from our home: As there had not been a record of an active Bald Eagle nest in Broward County since several years before DDT was abolished in the early 1970s, I reported the sighting on the Tropical Audubon Society's Web page, and birders in neighboring Pembroke Pines had a general idea of where they might be breeding. In March, 2008, Kelly Smith, a local middle school teacher found the nest, located only about [specific street address withheld]. It contained one nearly full-grown eaglet. This photo of \"P. Piney One\" was taken by Kelly Smith on March 15, 2008 and is reproduced here with her permission: This pair of eagles has returned to the same nest each year, successfully raising and fledging two chicks in 2009, three in 2010, and two more this past spring. The nest is about 50 feet high in an exotic Australian Pine tree with smaller trees blocking most of the view, so we only get distant looks. On December 11, 2008, both adults are shown sitting on the nest, only two days before the first of two eggs was laid:: Local middle school students conducted a nationwide poll that chose names for the two eaglets, “Hope” and \"Justice:” They hatched on January 15,2009. Here they are, squabbling with each other at exactly one month of age. Hope, the older and larger, is on the left: The eagle nest attracted a great deal of attention, and crowds of up to 100 people came to see the antics of the eaglets, causing traffic hazards as they stopped on the roadway and parked illegally. The Mayor took an interest in the nest, which is located on City of Pembroke Pines property, and he announced his intention to declare the site a City Bald Eagle Sanctuary, and took measures to protect both the eagles and observers. The City has amended its planning documents to pave the way for an ordinance that will provide safeguards against disturbance of any eagle nest in the city. This past summer, major resurfacing of the roadway and construction of a sidewalk were suspended in the area of the nest during the eagles' breeding season (May 15 - October 1). I photographed these three eaglets on March 2, 2010. The Middle School students' poll resulted in them being named Chance, Lucky and Courage. All three fledged successfully: The eagles returned in October, 2010 to refurbish the nest, and eggs were laid around December 11. ( * See end note about how we estimate the time of egg laying and hatching). On January 23, 2011 at the age of about 9 days, this chick was first seen, peering over the nest rim: Here, it waits as its parent tears off a bit of food. A younger sibling was not yet visible from the ground: The Parent eagle feeds the chick : This was about as good a view we could get from 150 feet. Vegetation now makes viewing much more difficult. Plans for a nest camera did not materialize: Here is the older of the two eaglets, on February 3, 2011. Much of her natal down has already disappeared: At one month old, on February 15, 2011, the down had been reduced to a fuzzy cap: Less than two weeks later, on February 27, 2011, the eaglets looked almost as large as adults. We called them \"P. Piney Seven & Eight.\" Bald Eagles exhibit sexual dimorphism that starts when they are nestlings, with the females usually considerably larger than males. PP 7 is the larger and was presumed to be a female: At two and a half months of age on March 23, 2011 they were exercising their wings, preparing for their first flight, which usually occurs when they are between 10 and 12 weeks old. PP7, on the right, has more white underneath than her younger brother: On March 30, 2011, we found PP8 alone in the nest; PP7 had flown off, but returned within three days to be fed: On March 30, PP8 was \"helicoptering,\" hovering in place up to a foot off the ground: Here, on April 3, 2011, my last shot of PP7 shows her roosting in a tree next to the nest. PP8 was flying back and forth on branches in the nest tree: *In estimating the timing of the laying of eggs and hatching of the eaglets, we must depend upon clues from changes in the behavior of the adults. The onset of incubation coincides with the laying of the first egg, which is when we suddenly see one of the pair down deep and immobile in the nest. Hatching is a time of excitement, as the parents shift position frequently, peer down into the nest, and they start bringing in prey and tearing off bits to feed the tiny chick. The adults also sit a bit higher in the nest after the first egg hatches, supporting themselves on their wings to form a \"tent\" to shelter the chick and yet provide warmth to any eggs that have not yet hatched. Volunteer nest observers share their sightings and photos, and respond to queries in the Pembroke Pines Eagle Nest Watch FORUM here, which includes a link to spreadsheets that document observations over the past three breeding seasons . </body> </html>","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/The-eagles-have-landed-BLOG-td7100386.html","images":24},{"id":"7120333","topic":"7100386","order":2,"title":"Re: The eagles have landed (BLOG)","author":"Jill W","date":"2011-12-22T18:30:49.765000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"What wonderful descriptions and photos of the PP eagles, Ken! As eagle watchers, we saw the threats to the safety of observers who gathered at the very edge of the highway, as well as to those in vehicles who slowed down or stopped in the traffic lanes. The Eagle Sanctuary Steering Committee members met with FDOT in hopes of a solution that would separate the viewers from vehicle traffic. FDOT agreed to consider construction of a viewing area as part of its existing plan to put a sidewalk on the south side of Pines Boulevard. Unfortunately, the planning, approval and funding process cannot produce results before mid-2011. Among the complications are the lack of parking and the fact that the intersection at Pines and 209th is not engineered to permit a protected pedestrian crosswalk. This problem also has to be remedied before a sidewalk can be constructed. See the minutes of the Steering Committee's September 9, 2009 meeting with FDOT at this link . FDOT made it clear that it did not wish to encourage or create parking on the right-of way, which extends 50 feet on either side of the highway. In view of the extended planning horizon, we asked FDOT to consider some type of temporary wall (such as water-filled barrels or sectional barriers) that would allow for a breakdown lane and also keep nest observers off the shoulder of the road. FDOT's position was that such a barrier would itself cause a traffic hazard, as it would limit the space available for collision avoidance: \"Ken Schneider highlighted his experience with visitors to the site. He mentioned the difficulty of finding parking, speed limit violations, the crossing of Pines Blvd by pedestrians, and how children and pets are present. \"It was suggested that the Department place a barrier on the south side to protect pedestrians. However, the Department stated that placing a barrier in the right of way is a clear zone issue and was more of a hazard than a benefit as vehicles on the road would not have the ability to break should the need occur.\" As unhappy as I was at the outcome of this meeting, I left with the feeling that the public safety issues were indeed very complex, and that FDOT felt a sincere responsibility to safely accommodate viewers. The extended planning horizon was the greatest disappointment.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Ongoing-concerns-about-restrictions-at-nest-site-td4037631.html","images":0},{"id":"7574615","topic":"7574615","order":1,"title":"DEC 3: Adults seen singly near nest 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2016-12-04T12:34:39.952000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"Mary Lou and I dropped by the nest at 8:[specific street address withheld] to the South Florida Audubon wetlands walk and found the female (Jewel) roosting on a Melaleuca snag west of the nest. I do remember frequently observing smaller birds (like grackles) spending a lot of time in the nest picking around last season during the period when Hope and Justice were no longer spotted and the adults only occasionally flew in. I assumed with the nest all but abandoned, the smaller birds were taking care of any scraps. We all also got pictures of the huge swarm of flies over the nest at the end of the season. Perhaps over the course of the summer, with the hard rains, eventually the material decays or is removed by other birds or insects. Also.....it appears as if the eagles are making a whole new layer of sticks on top of the old nest. You can tell that by the lightness in color of the newer sticks. I have only seen them bringing sticks in from the south and they look like they are dead maleleuca wood due to that bleached, light color. As they build up the new layer, at least they will have \"fresh bedding\" right under them! We also observed during the last days of Hope and Justice using the nest, their tossing sticks over the side and moving them around in the nest. Perhaps some sort of instinctual practice or behavior as they readied to leave the nest? I assume they really don't come into contact with another nest until they are around 5 and have found a mate and are building their own nest. In other words....more of the same! Ken and Mary Lou arrived about 20 min. into my stay and we watched the activity (or lack there of) together. No other eagle appeared but Ken spotted a series of flocks of Robins headed north right over us. It was fun to hear their chirping and calls again like where I grew up in Pittsburgh and knew it meant spring was coming! I hope this doesn't mean that winter, and our dry, cool weather is over for us in South Fl. It seemed odd to see Robins perched where the eagles often are in the tall Pine right of the nest, as you see in the photo. One other activity at the nest was human kind as 3 Florida DOT planners arrived to look around the area. We showed them the nest and described a bit about how we wish the watching and safety could be improved. It is at least hopeful that some work is obviously occurring in that regard. Al departed and Mark arrived (who surprised Tom by saying that he had seen the mysterious 5th eagle the day before Tom.) Now no more kidding Tom that he came up with \"funny photos!\" Really...we never doubted you, Tom! As we all were gathering our stuff to leave, Tom and/or Carolyn saw an eagle flying very high that was a juvenile. A few minutes later there was a lot of calling from the maleleucas and 2 beautiful hawks (red shouldered?) came flying from that area right in front of us fairly low...paralleling the road, calling the whole time. Soon they were joined by a third flier and it was Justice, who flew low with them, circling the area and then soared high with his new friends. They flew off together to the east and we lost sight of them. We were glad Justice found new flying partners as we haven't seen him with Hope in a while!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Sat-morning-29-May-09-8-11am-Justice-finds-a-friend-td3000101.html","images":0},{"id":"3001941","topic":"3000101","order":2,"title":"Re: Sat morning, 29 May 09, 8-11am, Justice finds a friend","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2009-05-31T09:49:49.897000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Yes, it was nice to see Justice having fun with someone! He did get up briefly to re-position and rearrange something in the nest. Several other observers were present. When he settled down again we all saw something sticking up just to the right of his head. It looked \"fuzzy\" or furry like a prey item or even the head of a second eagle. We dismissed that possibility but still could not interpret the odd object. Sure enough, an adult was sitting on the egg(s). Judging from the size of it head and how more of its body was elevated above the nest rim, I assume it was Joy, the female. I think I could discern the \"scar\" of her previous head injury in this view as she tended to the egg(s). The police must actually see the offender, so it does no good to report this incident after the fact, but if you see this car again at the site do be extra vigilant. The eaglets are easily frightened if someone approaches them, as they are no acclimated to human presence as much as the adults. Suggest you don't bother the police about people on the sidewalk. They will ask them to leave but so far I don't think they have handed out any tickets except for illegal parking. Technically, all on the land north of the fence-- the sidewalk up to the road shoulder and Pines Boulevard is an \"existing disturbance\" and entering that posted area would not violate Federal (USF&W) or State (FWC) guidelines. However, in the interest of public safety and also further protecting the nest, the City has enforcement power over this area and their authority should be respected. FYI, the SFWMD land to the west of SW 109th Avenue, including the melaleuca snags, is not City property and there is no prohibition against entry-- just no firearms, no campfires, no motorized vehicles and no camping. Of course it is possible for someone to sneak into the protected area from there, so be alert if you suspect someone is doing this but do not call the police unless they actually are located inside the protected area.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Empty-nest-and-no-eagles-9-00-10-00-AM-SUN-APR-6-td7573475.html","images":0},{"id":"7103009","topic":"7103009","order":1,"title":"Female eagle is incubating today Friday December 16","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2011-12-16T19:25:30.103000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2011–2012","text":"I believe that Phil's observation of the eagle low on nest December 11 can be used as the approximate starting date of incubation. She also showed dark streaks on her upper and lower tail coverts. Her head was entirely white. Since the right side of the nest is obstructed by the fallen branch it is possible that an adult was incubating or brooding eaglets out of sight. Liz stayed on and posted subsequently. We visited the Pembroke Pines Bald Eagle nest at about 9:30 and watched until 10:10 AM this morning JAN 19. It was a cool 56 degrees (F) with a brisk northerly wind of about 8-10 MPH. The male (Pride) was standing on the nest. He turned his back to tear at a prey item and clearly was feeding small morsels to one or more eaglets. He continued the feeding until 10:00 AM, when he flew to a branch just above and to the right of the nest to clean his bill. After approximately two minutes he flew to another branch which was a bit higher. He seemed restless and was looking about. We thought he might be waiting for his mate (Jewel) to return. He did not vocalize. In the meantine the nest remained uncovered. Phil joined us just after 10:00 AM, and we had to depart at 10:10. Phil later texted us to say he only was able to watch until 10:15 Am and there had been no change-- Pride was still roosting and Jewel had not returned. Later Phil visited, at 12:45 PM and reported that now Jewel was roosting on the branch near the nest and that there was no adult on the nest. FDOT Planning and Environmental Management will coordinate with the design Project Manager, Henry Oaikhena to see if some type of viewing platform/elevated sidewalk can be incorporated into his Pines Blvd resurfacing project (construction is scheduled to begin in June 2011).\" Keep in mind that the entire grassy swale from the edge of the highway, to within a few feet of the temporary chain-link fence is under FDOT jurisdiction. Parking and safe pedestrian crossing issues will also need to be resolved in coordination with the City of Pembroke Pines. The project timeframe is June 2011, depending on approval of environmental concerns (wetland & eagle) with the agencies (SFWMD, USFWS, and FWC). David Bogardus, Senior Environmental Specialist with FDOT District 4 Planning & Environmental Management will consider any comments readers may have concerning the design of the sidewalk, which will pass in front of the eagle nest, downslope and at a point more distant from the highway than the optimal nest-viewing areas. Since this would be closer to the wooded area, an elevated platform would be required to permit a view of the nest.
