Your observation is important because one adult has been seen consistently and you also believe you heard an eagle calling from inside the wooded area. If perhaps they have a new nest the female could be incubating and since they exchange duties there would be only one adult free at any given time. They also call in recognition when one adult arrives to relieve the other of nesting duties. Observers should be alert to this possibility! On the other side of this possibility is the fact that there have been no observations of the adults carrying nesting materials to a new nest, which takes a lot of work. The male was not around. In the past she would be so low when incubating that sometimes she was out of sight. This time her head and part of neck were readily visible, facing to the left. Maybe the nest cup is not as deep as in previous years. Last year the left rim was built up quite high and often obscured the incubating adult. Once laid we can expect them to be covered nearly continuously. The female will be on the eggs most of the time, but the male may incubate about 1/4 of the time. Both develop bare brood patches on their breasts to keep the eggs warm. If she or the male consistently are sitting low from this point on we can start counting out the 35 days until the the first chick hatches. All of a sudden there was a huge racket.....the adult was really vocalizing, which got the young in the nest going also. As I focused on the adult with my binoculars it seemed to be grabbing at something with its feet and flapping its wings. I saw 2 birds, later identified to be mockingbirds, that were attacking the eagle from all sides. The eagle became totally annoyed with the tag team effort....the mockingbirds were also really loud as they kept flying at the eagle. And......the winners were the mockingbirds, as the eagle flew off the limb and flew by the front of the nest, making 2 large circles as it picked its way through the woods. The whole time the adult and the juveniles in the nest were calling back and forth. The show ended when the adult flew out of the nest area and headed southeast. We departed at about 8:30 for the Library bird walk and returned at approximately 10:10 AM, finding Jewel in about the same spot and Pride usually invisible in the nest. Jewel was preening, revealing that she still has some dark upper and under tail coverts and a bit of dark in one or two tail feathers. Her head sometimes seemed to have some tiny dark streaks on crown and front of her neck, but in some shots she looked to be in complete adult plumage. She removed quite a few body down feathers, which drifted like snowflakes. Here, as she slices, the dark feather tips on some of her undertail coverts are evident: Eventually Jewel started pecking as some twigs and finally pulled off one and then flew to the nest, where she and Pride called mutually. Then Pride flew up to a branch above the nest calling to her for a while and finally moved to roost in the pine tree to the east. We met up with more than a dozen of the Library walk participants at the nest and am very happy that the birds put on such a great show. The sun was bright and fairly high behind the roost tree, very poor for photography. I never got my setting quite right, so my shots are very soft.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/SAT-JAN-2-10-42-AM-Incubation-shift-change-td7574295.html","images":10},{"id":"7576630","topic":"7576630","order":1,"title":"any updates on our eagle family?","author":"Speechykeane","date":"2023-04-05T16:09:43.438000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Just wondering if there are any updates on our eagles.. People are getting closer and closer to the nest and the fist thing I try to tell them is the distances (330 FEET) recommended by the Audubon and wildlife protection acts. So it is both unethical and illegal to disturb bald eagles. Some cases or locations are different or have exceptions by they way the eagles chose where they made their nests, and the Deerfield nest is one of those with a special rule because of the parks bike trail, but this is not an excuse to break the distance rule claiming that the eagles are used to the traffic and activity. So I decided to measure the nest location in reference to the road (10th street) and the No Trespassing signs that the DOT has posted in the field where everyone pulls off the road to view the nesting activity. I decided to do this after a guy challenged me today saying that there was no way those signs were 300 feet from the nest, him and 2 others had setup tripods half of the distance from the No Trespassing signs to the nest, and the adult flew in with food and didn't take it to the chicks so I told them they might be too close because I have never seen this unusual activity from the adults with food, they usually take it to the nest, and weather this is normal or not they were too close at less than 200 feet from the nest. So it turns out he was right about the distance, I was wrong, the signs are not 300 feet from the nest they are only 250 feet and 330 feet would put you in the roadway and obviously we can't do that. I'm just trying to say that we need to be more careful with the chicks at this time because they could easily fall out of the nest causing them to fledge too early. Please try to let people know what the distances are and that getting too close can cause harm to the eagles. Most people don't have a problem with this and I get into some great conversations with people about the eagles and I think they like to hear about them, so I direct them to this site to see the pictures and read about the eagles. The distance was measured with a wheel measuring device that I use to do architectural drawings of buildings so I know it is accurate down to the inch. They proceeded to raise a pair of chicks this spring, we watched as the young eagles starting taking their first flights, and ranged further and further from the nest. We did not see any of the eagles throughout the hotter months of the summer, and just started seeing some of them again at the end of September . Yesterday we spotted an immature (brown head, with splotches of white) bald eagle on the nest, and a mature bald eagle circling around the nest area occasionally perching on limbs in nearby trees. Yes, it is rather common for juvenile and immature bald eagles to return to their nest after migrating away during the summer. We have found the reaction of their parents to be variable. While they often chase them away, especially the older immatures, they sometimes tolerate their presence. Once the pair reunites and begins rebuilding the nest they will likely be more hostile. We again welcome your photos and reports. It will be interesting to compare their activities such as success in hatching eaglets again this year. Our local eagles are already rebuilding their nest from last year. Good luck to you and the Louisiana eagles and hope to hear from you again. PS-- I am not a stranger to Louisiana hurricanes, having lived in New Orleans when Hurricane Camille struck in 1969. At that time it was the most powerful hurricane to ever strike the US mainland. Friday, January 22 is the \"EHD\" (Estimated Hatch Date). Possible indications of hatching are the brooding bird will sit up higher in the nest, and both birds may stare down into the nest. Bringing in small food scraps is a sure sign that an eaglet has hatched. This morning Mary Lou and I watched for a little over a half hour after 9:30 AM. When we arrived there was one eagle on the nest, and none in the melaleucas to the west. The bird on the nest was sitting a bit higher and looking towards the right (west). We could see its entire head and a bit of its brown body, which we though to be a bit unusual. After about 10 minutes the bird rotated to face almost to the left (NE). Its head was then barely visible, leading us to believe that the nest rim may be a bit higher on the left and may account for the difference. We checked the \"melaleuca graveyard\" again before we left, and were surprised to find an adult roosting there in about the usual position fairly near the road. I photographed it and could not see any sign of the brown tip on the far right tail feather that marks the male, so we presume this one was the female.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Tuesday-January-19-Incubation-day-32-td4423559.html","images":2},{"id":"4424196","topic":"4423559","order":2,"title":"Re: Tuesday, January 19-- Incubation day #32","author":"Trisha","date":"2010-01-19T20:20:16.433000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Wonderful photos and description, Ken. Phil was there and he said he saw the eaglet on the nest the evening before. We saw neither the eaglet nor any adult eagles. We did not hear any calls. As we watched, two ospreys joined the numerous vultures soaring over the nest. A Short-tailed Hawk (light morph) circled high to the west A Merlin perched atop a dead tree behind and west of the nest. The Merlin took flight. We returned this morning at about 9:20 AM and watched for nearly an hour. Again, we saw and heard no sign of the eaglet and there were no adults in sight. Has the eaglet fledged? As mentioned earlier, its siblings from earlier years left the nest a week or more earlier, and they branched and helicoptered for a week or more before taking their first flight. Absence of adults around the nest is also of some concern. Eaglets normally return to the nest to be fed for several weeks after their first flight. Please make an effort to stop by to look and listen for the eaglet. If adults bring prey to the empty nest in an attempt to lure the eaglet back you should here it call if it is anywhere nearby. Adults may also look in the direction of the eaglet if it has fledged. If uninjured, it is old enough to get back on the nest. We have had anxious times in past years when it sometimes took over two days for an eaglet to return to the nest.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Has-Eaglet-left-the-nest-Not-seen-March-23-and-26-td7406651.html","images":3},{"id":"7406739","topic":"7406651","order":2,"title":"Re: Has Eaglet left the nest? On March 23, the first day the nest appeared to be empty, the eaglet was 86 days old, assuming it was the first egg hatched, on January 15. Over the past three seasons, the oldest chick fledged when it was (respectively) 77. 81, and 68 days, an average of 75 (mean 74.5) days of age. The youngest chick fledged (respectively) 79, 91 and 70 days, an average of 80 (mean 80.5) days after the first egg hatched. If we hypothesize that this year's eaglet was not the first hatched, its age of 86 days, while above average, is not outside the range of dates observed for youngest nest-mates in past broods. (See the SUMMARY OF KEY OBSERVATIONS DURING EACH BALD EAGLE BREEDING SEASON (2007-Present) ) It is now important to determine the welfare of the eaglet. It should be capable of flight and may have relocated some distance away. This could account for the absence of adults at the nest site. In past years, adults were present most of the time during the period when eaglets left the nest. There is the possibility that it was injured or killed, not uncommon during the first days of free flight. Since we do not hear the eaglet calling or see adults peering down under the nest or in nearby trees, I believe it would be futile to initiate a search for a downed eaglet in the vicinity of the nest. I am asking volunteer eagle watchers to keep an eye out for the return of the eaglet, and to report observations about the behavior of any adult eagles that may be sighted.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Has-Eaglet-left-the-nest-Not-seen-March-23-and-26-td7406651.html","images":0},{"id":"7407283","topic":"7406651","order":4,"title":"Re: Has Eaglet left the nest?
