As usual, when shooting with a short lens and a teleconverter, plus the additional cropping, the quality of the image suffers. Since the purpose of these images is to add to the project, then quality is not the main concern, so I'm okay with the overall look. I hope to be able to afford a long lens one day so that we can all enjoy a little more detail and clarity in the images I post. I'm glad to see that you've experienced the eagle breaking off the branches. It did not look normal to me, especially since, as you've stated, he \"got more lumber than he bargained for!\" <---GREAT QUOTE I also agree with the depth of the nest and the visibility factors being different than last year. If a deeper nest means a safer chick or chicks, then that's a very good thing. After all, the eagles are parents who are caring for their young, not contractors that are building a nest for us observers to get a better look. As for the feeding of the prey to their young, that has to be the answer to my question, especially since they supposedly don't regurgitate their food. As I read your explanation, I realized that this was the information I was missing. They must be caching their food in the nest because, as I observed, neither of the eagles brought food with them (that I could see with my eyes or with the images I took), but they definitely were feeding as they stood on the edge of the nest. Thank you for your detailed explanations. I'm learning something new everyday!!!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/January-26-2010-5-03pm-to-5-46-td4465131.html","images":0},{"id":"7573042","topic":"7573042","order":1,"title":"4/16/13. He/She writes: \"Hi Ken Sometime around 11 today I heard a lot of chatter among the eagles so I got my binoculars to watch. Some different behavior was going on. The smaller lighter colored one, I am assuming is the female was in the nest while the other was nearby in a tree. So far I have always seen them together in the nest. They were calling out to each other but the female didn't want the other near the nest. So I watched for about 45 minutes. Finally the one that was sitting one the other tree landed in the nest then the next thing I know another Eagle came in from the south side and the two flew off to the north. About 15 minutes later the one came back and landed in the nest. There was a lot of chatter but it wasn't the usual chatter. Then the one eagle got on top of the female lots of flapping wings but it didn't last long. I thought it was interesting enough to tell you about it. I know someone has been taking pictures with a long telephoto lens so maybe they got some good ones. Any news on the shopping center? Maybe if they have a family soon the shopping center won't be around for a couple of years. Boy do I feel privileged to see these birds every day.\" MY REPLY: Thanks so much for the exciting report. The smaller eagle is actually the male. You describe copulation or an attempt. Successful mating only takes about 7-8 seconds of contact. Sometimes the male may mount without actually copulating as part of courtship and bonding. It is actually getting a bit late for them to lay the first egg, so please keep an eye on the nest. It is high up and deep and it may be difficult for you to see an incubating adult in the nest. An alternate explanation for the behavior is that an egg may have hatched. Sometimes the eagles get excited at this event. If so, one of the adults will stay on or very near the nest for most of the time during the first two weeks or so, and you may see prey being brought to the nest and feeding even before any eaglet becomes visible. Again, thank you and please keep us posted. I hope the photographer will share some photos.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-12-Lots-of-action-at-Palm-Springs-North-Nest-DA-004-td7574302.html","images":0},{"id":"7574081","topic":"7574081","order":1,"title":"MAR 20: Deerfield Mom & her 3 Eaglets","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2015-03-21T14:04:32.358000-04:00","nest":"Quiet Waters / Deerfield","season":"","text":"Hellene sent this great photo of the Quiet Waters triplets. I drove very slowly by the dead trees to the west and did not see an eagle. I was alarmed to see a large white branch sticking up through the nest. It was at an angle, the bottom of which was quite a distance below the bottom left side of the nest and the top appeared to protrude through the nest and ended about even with the large center trunk in the back of the nest. It's the trunk with the red vertical streaks. At times, the incubating eagle's head was obscured by the top part of this stick/branch. I watched until 3:45 with a 20 minute break and thankfully, I noticed no change in the behavior of the eagles. It was very windy when I first arrived and I feared that the dead bare branch had blown into to the nest and perhaps struck and injured a chick, egg or adult. I can't imagine that an eagle would be able to lift such a thick and long branch to the nest. I wish I could share a picture with you but for some reason all of a sudden, when I connect the camera to my computer (and I've tried more than one computer), nothing happens. The camera does not flash \"busy\" like it always has before and the computer does not show that it is connected. This has not been my day. I took a look at recent pictures of the nest to see if could compare to what I saw today. I noticed in Ken's third picture posted yesterday that there was a large branch as part of the nest near the bottom left side. It is partly obscured by some pine needles/leaves or whatever they are called. I'm wondering if the strong wind repositioned that branch, however, in Ken's picture, the branch is not white like the one I saw today. Maybe it was just the lighting. The male showed up at 3:30 and quietly (no greetings) landed on a tree branch above the nest. The female continued to incubate for about 3 minutes and then stood up, called out and flew to the dead trees to the west. The male flew in a little circle and took over the nest duties. I (and other local watchers I have discussed this with) agree that there would be too much risk in releasing the eaglet anywhere near its Pembroke Pines nest. An adult was deep in the nest and usually not visible at all. No other adult was observed. S/he raised her head a bit a couple of times. Does not appear to be \"tenting\" as we would expect if an egg has hatched. Both adults were photographed two days ago looking into the nest. From that photo (on Facebook) it was not clear whether this represented the parents peering at a new eaglet or perhaps only an exchange of incubation duties. No prey or carrying of food was evident, and the episode was not further described, especially what happened before and afterward. From today's observation I would conclude either that the first egg has not yet hatched or if it had the parent was sitting unusually low because of the inclement weather. The high nest rim makes it difficult to reach a firm conclusion. Please watch the nest and report behavior as Sunday JAN 17 will be the 35th day after the female finally settled down and appeared to start incubation.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-15-Adult-deep-in-nest-still-incubating-td7574303.html","images":0},{"id":"7573203","topic":"7573203","order":1,"title":"Both eagles seen Wednesday morning NOV 13","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2013-11-13T13:01:52.058000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"I arrived a little before 8:00 AM-- I think I saw Phil leaving just as I came by. The two adults were standing guard in the two Australian Pines just to the west of the nest, nearest the road. The adults called to each other several times, but we could not hear the chick. I could not reach Brian Mealey, so I called FWC to ask that an agent come by to see if the chick appeared uninjured. The adult birds flew away, one at a time, after 15 to 20 minutes. At about 9:25 AM, a fully black immature eagle flew in northbound from the northwest corner of the Eagle Forest, veered to the west over the eastbound lane of Pines Boulevard, to around 209th Avenue, and turned to the left (south), right toward the power lines. She stalled and attempted to land on the top wire, but in less than a second flew off toward the dead Melaleucas. We found her sitting on one about 200 feet south of the fence line. An adult was roosting further back, to her southwest. Agent Brock (who lives nearby and has observed the nest in his free time) responded at 9:45 and observed Hope. We briefed him, telling him that it appeared that Justice fell towards a point about 10 feet west of the nest tree. He went in and spent an hour searching the general area of the nest, but did not find the eaglet. His arms were pretty well scratched up from the sawgrass. He said that the area to the west of the nest is relatively clear, and it is possible that Justice was able to fly out rather freely. The good news is that if Justice had been injured, he almost certainly would have been found by Agent Brock in the search area. At 9:55, while Brock was searching the nest site, Hope again appeared from the west, and this time landed at the very top of the Australian Pine to the east of the nest tree, the one commonly used as a roost tree by the adults. She perched on the very small limbs, balancing quite a bit at first, but finally settled down for almost a half hour. We felt sure this bird was Hope. Hope then flew off to the west at 10:12, at first heading towards the Melaleucas, but curved back around toward us, gaining altitude. She flew in a spiral right overhead until she was very high. Above her, appearing almost as a speck was an adult Bald Eagle. We finally lost sight of both, off to the southwest. Brian Mealey returned my calls and said that, as with Hope, we should expect Justice to attempt to get back into the nest during the next 48 hours. He asked us to call him if the second eaglet does not appear by then. Although it is difficult to expect eagle watchers to sit and look at an empty nest, we should continue covering the nest until Justice returns, or it becomes necessary to conduct another search. It will also be interesting to document the habits of the youngsters-- will they return to the nest for feedings? How long will they keep coming back to the nest or the immediate area befor wandering off? Brian said they could linger there for over a month, even after becoming quite independent of their parents.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Update-on-Justice-and-Hope-td2594312.html","images":0},{"id":"2594578","topic":"2594312","order":2,"title":"Re: Update on Justice and Hope","author":"Andrew Macfarlane","date":"2009-04-06T14:00:48.984000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"Thanks for all the updates on the situation. They remained in place for an entire hour between 8:30 - 9:30 AM. Researchers do not always concur, but the female is said to usually be the one to select the nest location. This morning Luis and Dave reported that they are actively gathering nesting materials and bringing them to the site of the new nest which failed this spring. They also were seen copulating or attempting to do so. The 2021-2022 breeding season has started early. They had gotten off to a late start last season because of losing the first brood the previous year and had to tend to an eaglet almost into September. Perhaps not needing to care for a brood has re-set their biologic clocks. Let's hope that they do a better job of constructing the nest than last season! On September 11. male (Pride) was roosting near the site of the original (old) nest: The female (Jewel) was roosting above the remains of the failed nest. Her position corresponded to the placement of the main nest platform (bole) which separated and began the process which ended with the grounding of both eaglets. When I arrived around 10am there were no eagles anywhere around the nest and none could be heard. Several times we felt we may have heard one south of the nest but could not confirm it. We watched for about 2 hrs with no action and finally 1 eaglet flew in to the nest very smoothly, ate leftovers and smoothly took off, flying over the road and then headed north. A short time later another eaglet arrived....we think a younger one as it struggled to land in the nest, finally landing in a tall pine to the east. After teetering back and forth for a while it headed straight to the nest on a long glide and made it safely. It didn't seem to eat, but went down in the nest to rest. A short time later the first eaglet (we think) flew back and landed on a branch above the nest. An adult soon brought food and the eaglet in the nest ate but the one on the branch stayed there. The adult flew off behind the nest. About 30 minutes later the female adult brought another meal and this time by jumping and branching down, the eaglet on the branch made it into the nest and both eaglets ate. Right behind the female adult, the male followed and didn't go to the nest, but circled in front of the nest and then headed north. The female flew to the pine just east of the nest to perch. She stayed about 15 min. and then took off to the east. The 2 eaglets remained in the nest, sometimes resting and occasionally standing. Still no sign of the 3rd eaglet that Al feels is the youngest one that he saw this morning down low in the nest woods. Several groups of visitors came by, some returning and others their first time. Carolyn came for a couple hours and helped watch and at one time she saw a juvenile flying out beyond the maleleucas, but since we didn't have the other 2 in site....we couldn't confirm if it was the third. Really......keeping track of 3 is definitely challenging, as they come and go at different times. When I upload photos hopefully we can see some differences in the color patterns so we can try to tell 1 from the other! Any photos we post will be a great aid in figuring out if 1 is missing, short of seeing all 3 together!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Youngest-Eaglet-down-below-nest-tree-April-24-2010-td4955962.html","images":0},{"id":"4957032","topic":"4955962","order":3,"title":"Re: Youngest Eaglet down below nest tree April 24, 2010","author":"Carolyn J","date":"2010-04-24T21:16:54.489000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"Thanks for the post, Trisha!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Youngest-Eaglet-down-below-nest-tree-April-24-2010-td4955962.html","images":0},{"id":"7576205","topic":"7576205","order":1,"title":"MAY 10: Update on condition of second rescued eaglet","author":"NewMexiKen","date":"2021-05-10T08:38:37.386000-04:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"","text":"The older eaglet, the presumed female (P Piney 26) grounded on April 28 and rescued May 1, is being treated and rehabilitated at Pelican Harbor Seabird Station. Lots of times, one adult would be in the nest with the two chicks and the other in the favorite pine tree to the east. And, there was food and lots of it! I couldn't believe how much they all ate. At least twice, the adults were together in the east pine tree. Of course, the photographers were very excited. One of the chicks went flying for a little bit, and when it returned, it didn't quite make it to the nest. It was about two or three feet above the nest. She appeared more active than usual and twice got up and looked into the nest. Her wings seemed partially open, suggesting she may be \"tenting\" a hatchling. The (presumed) male was roosting in a Melaleuca snag to the west of the nest. Desiree arrived and we both had trouble being sure about which eagle was the male. I will continue to identify this one as the male, Pride. At 9:05 AM Pride flew and roosted in the dead tree to the east of the nest. At 9:09 he flew off to the northwest. At 9:11 he returned carrying grasses in his talons. The male carried the nesting material directly to the nest. Both adults looked down into the nest for a short time. At 9:13 Joy flew into the favored roost pine just east of the nest but stayed there only a few seconds. She then flew further east to the dead tree. I followed her part way but she again flew out and turned back westward. We heard some calling. Joy was chasing a second year juvenile eagle up into the air just west of the nest, over Pines Boulevard. They briefly skirmished, and the action happened so fast that neither Desiree nor I could get them both into our viewfinders at once before the juvie retreated to the south and disappeared. To me, this looks like a different bird than the one I photographed earlier this week because it is in an obvious state of molt. Most of its secondaries are long and bulging as expected in juvenile (1+ year old) birds. Both its primaries and secondaries are of irregular length, its tail is molting and one left primary is missing. It did have a considerable amount of white on its belly and a poorly defined bib but its wings were inconsistent with an older (White-belly II or 3rd year) immature bird. Meantime, Pride continued sitting in the nest. The changes in behavior, such as the continued presence of both adults, the elevated incubation posture, and the increased examination of the nest contents by both adults strongly suggest that the first egg has hatched.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-11-Change-in-behavior-signals-new-nestling-has-hatched-td7573314.html","images":12},{"id":"7573316","topic":"7573314","order":2,"title":"Re: JAN 11 Change in behavior signals new nestling has hatched","author":"Desiree","date":"2014-01-12T15:04:50.625000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2013–2014","text":"Thank you for sharing your awesome photos, and you detail description of the coming and goings of J&P.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JAN-11-Change-in-behavior-signals-new-nestling-has-hatched-td7573314.html","images":0},{"id":"7573986","topic":"7573986","order":1,"title":"Bald Eagles Make Michigan Power Plant Their Winter Home","author":"Square Grouper","date":"2015-02-09T12:30:20.881000-05:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"From the Detroit Free Press (link with photos and other info at the bottom): MONROE — The bald eagles perched very still in the trees along the Detroit River — dozens of dark sentinels surveying the landscape around them, waiting for an opportunity to come along. Suddenly, a fish swimming below stirred one to action. With a breathtaking spread and thump of its 6-foot-plus wingspan, the eagle took to the air. It glided, almost dancing along frigid air currents, before a sudden turn and dive to the water, its talons snatching a silvery fish. This scene wasn't part of some pristine wilderness setting of babbling brooks and snow-capped mountains. It was in the industrial setting of DTE Energy's Monroe power plant. One of the nation's largest coal-fired power plants is an unlikely setting for an environmental recovery story, but increasingly every winter, the plant's relatively warm discharge water has turned it into a popular gathering point for scores of bald eagles — the open water making catching fish easier for the birds of prey. It's been this way for the past 10-15 years on the power plant's restricted 1,000 acres, said DTE wildlife biologist Matt Shackelford. As river fish, like the gizzard shad, seek warmer waters during the winter, they find DTE's discharge — about 12 degrees warmer than the river's normal water temperature. Then the bald eagles find the fish. \"As the birds are flying south, they see open water and secluded land,\" he said. \"They dropped in, stayed for the winter and word got around, so to speak.\" Once ubiquitous throughout Michigan, bald eagles were nearly wiped out in the state by the early 1960s because of pesticides, pollution, habitat loss and humans, said David Best, a retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who for more than a quarter-century was involved in bald eagle monitoring in Michigan (MORE AT LINK). http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2015/02/09/bald-eagle-dte-monroe-detroit-river/23088039/","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Bald-Eagles-Make-Michigan-Power-Plant-Their-Winter-Home-td7573986.html","images":0},{"id":"7540305","topic":"7540305","order":1,"title":"Update and Fascinating Story of Minnesota Eagles","author":"Square Grouper","date":"2012-05-08T14:54:32.078000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"I posted in another topic the link to the nest cam in Minnesota that the TV show \"Minnesota Bound\" had set up this year. What transpired there over the past few days is nothing short of amazing. First, the sad part, one of the chicks fell out of the nest, the eagle watchers received permission to go check out the chick and confirmed he did not survive the fall. Now the interesting part. A few days later, the second chick somehow got his wing stuck in the bottom of the nest. After about 12 hours a decision was made to climb the tree and free the chick from the nest. All necessary approvals were obtained and on Friday at 4:30, a climber, with some help from a bucket truck, went up and freed the chick. After giving the chick a once over, the climber, who was also an eagle specialist, decided that the chick needed to be removed from the nest. The chick's wing was bruised and swollen, it had equilibrium problems which made it prone to falling out of the nest, and it had open cuts in its back that were infected with maggots b/c while it was stuck it was still eating, and thus its other bodily functions were still working, so it had been laying in its own feces. The chick was taken to the Raptor Center at the Univ. of Minnesota, where the goal was to keep it for as short a time as possible and then put it back in the nest. Fortunately, the chick recovered quickly, and on Sunday afternoon he (she?) was placed back in the nest. There was of course a fear that the parents would not return to the nest given that both chicks were now gone. However, the parents were still in the area, which was encouraging, but did not return all night Sunday or Monday morning. Then, on Monday evening, just as the watchers were getting ready to remove the chick again so that it would not be alone a second night and prone to predation, the parents both returned and the reunion was complete. A check of the cam just before I posted this showed dad standing over the chick b/c its raining, with what is left of two fish in the nest. The regular viewers say its dad b/c he has a black spot on the back of his head which is apparently the last if his juvenile feathers. The entire sequence of events was pretty awesome. It also raises a lot of questions. One of the amazing things to me as that the climber sat on top of the next like I would sit on a picnic table. The nest was that strong and supportive. It also makes you wonder how many eaglets get stuck in nests and perish b/c there are no nest cams. Maybe it was a freak accident, but I have to imagine that it was not. Also, there were questions of whether or not the parents would return. These parents did, but would others? How about if the chick had been gone one more day? The great birder and author Roger Tory Peterson described his \"epiphany,\" when, as a child, he picked up an apparently dead flicker and it sprung to life in his hands and flew off. There was something about seeing the beauty of the bird's intricate and colorful plumage so close at hand that ignited a passion that was to change the world, not only for Roger, but for so many who found, in his field guides, a portal that, once opened, would never close (Readers might be interested in how a similar thing happened to my wife, Mary Lou, upon first sighting an Elegant Trogon ). We have seen such a transformation occur among many of the people who visited our neighborhood Bald Eagle nest in Pembroke Pines, Florida. With a little help from the volunteer nest-watchers, \"lookers\" often turned into \"observers\" right before our eyes. As observers, they instantly developed an insatiable thirst for knowledge and understanding, that may lead to greater appreciation and concern, and spill over into a new ethic of conservation...
