I was so excited walking up to the nest tree to see with the naked eye the white head of an eagle. Binoculars confirmed that this eagle was sitting near the spot where the nest was located in prior years. A second eagle was perched on a large branch to the right. Observed until 1:30. No activity or chatter. I was unable to determine if they are building a nest at the marina. I did not go to the 10th street location. When I arrived at the nest area at noon, there was one on the nest. At 12:10, one flew over my head. I quickly checked out the one on the nest to make sure the one that flew was not the one on the nest. It wasn't, so I can say that there are two adult eagles in the area. I left for a few minutes and when I came back at 12:44, both adults were standing side by side on the nest. Wow, what a wonderful sight that was!! Sorry, no pictures again. I could get a good view only when the wind blew from the east and moved over those trees in front of the nest. A few things I want to mention is that I didn't see a sign prohibiting pedestrians on the south side of the road. As I stood next to the END OF SCHOOL ZONE sign, at least 4 times, a PP policeman drove right by me and didn't stop. Twice a sheriff car went by and did not stop. Also, while I was standing by the sign, my toes were attacked by red ants. Ouch! The eagles look like they've just been to the barber and beauty shop. Not a feather out of place and they just have a very healthy look about them. Oh, and I never saw the bird with the white tail feathers and dark head. All chicks were seen. An adult quickly made a drop around 12:15, then flew to the favored tree to the east. It appeared that the chick farthest to the right ate most of whatever was left. Al and I were saying that maybe that one (that mainly hunkered down in) is the youngest chick. The one that stayed furthest to the left most of the time seemed to be the oldest, by the darkness of the feathers, as the one in the middle had more downy feathers still. The 2 on the left interacted, and the middle one got the favored spot on the very left. The bigger one seemed to be yelling at it, not liking to be stuck in the middle. So finally, he/she helicoptered over him/her to get the best spot back. Took a few hops on the large, angular branch on the left side, too. The variety in the depth of markings on this bird's head can probably be accounted by variations in light and acuity of focus. Newfee was very large when first seen, while the second one that Phil called Glory was the smaller male. Jose and I photographed the same bird and noted subtle differences in our photos. This bird shows signs of molt, so it is actively replacing the immature (4th year) plumage. Note the variation in length of tail and covert feathers as new adult white feathers are growing in. Some of the dark feathers are still visible on her head but are obscured as they are gradually being replaced by adult white feathers. While they were watching another neighbor who lives on 86th Ave which is closer to the nest said the pair had one eaglet, which the others did not know. When I arrived it was perched in the tall pine west of the nest on the favored branch. Tom reported that it was eating on the nest when he arrived at 7am and then later flew to the tree where the 4 of us observed it staring in all directions, as usual. We all noticed after about an hour that it became antsy (pulling at feathers, fluffing, moving around a bit on the branch, and pooping twice.) We suspected (and got our cameras ready for) a takeoff. Before it flew, it stared straight at the field by the high school and I thought maybe it would head that way. (a good guess!) Very quickly, it lifted off the branch, heading across Pines. All four of us took off running, following the eagle as it landed near the top of the dead tree in the southeast corner of the vacant field along Pines. As soon as we arrived....we could tell it was leaving again. It was facing due east, with its body and head almost parallel to the ground....a pose I haven't seen very often. It took off somewhat northward and only went a few feet before in a strong, twisting movement, it descended sideways, and with its talons, grabbed at a long branch. It held on as it turned east until the branch snapped with a very loud crack! We were all so excited to finally see the actual selection of a stick for the nest! It flew directly back across the road with the forked branch tightly secured in its talons. By the time we could view the nest, the adult was in flight again to the tall pine just to the east, along the wire. About 10 minutes later, it flew back to the same favored tree west of the nest, along the wire. A short time later it flew again to the very top of the pine just behind. We had never seen it there before. In about 10 minutes it flew off to the northeast and hadn't returned when we left a half hour later. For some reason I had assumed that the eagles got the sticks for the nest by picking them up from the ground.....as when they pick up the straw from the field. After the eagle left the dead tree where it broke off the branch I noticed that almost all the branches looked freshly broken off and there really aren't many branches left at all. This must be a favorite branch collecting tree! Previously this season, the eagles seemed to be coming in from the south carrying their branches. We all were snapping photos so hopefully will get some posted soon. (Sorry Ken about not using the new form......I'll need some help/practice on that....now I'm trying to see if I can remember how to downsize my photos so they can be posted. I still have to trim them and Humberto said he could add them to the forum for me if I need help) Quite a special morning of eagle watching! I was also surprised that Tom saw the adult eating on the nest already....all this nest activity makes me wonder if the courtship has begun and if the eggs may come earlier this year? Only time will tell, and hopefully lots of watchers will post their observations so we can follow their progress in starting a new family....such an interesting and rewarding experience!","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/Amazing-Eagle-Watch-Sun-15-Nov-09-td4009742.html","images":0},{"id":"4009973","topic":"4009742","order":2,"title":"Re: Amazing Eagle Watch, Sun, 15 Nov 09","author":"Jill W","date":"2009-11-15T21:50:47.121000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2009–2010","text":"WOW!! Several were too young to have their species’ distinctive white heads. And at least six, according to a federal lab report, had ingested a highly toxic pesticide that essentially has been banned from the U.S. market, in part because it is lethal to birds. The report, obtained by the Annapolis radio station WNAV and shared with The Washington Post, answers one big question in a mysterious wildlife crime that angered conservation organizations and stumped U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service investigators, who were involved because the bald eagle is a federally protected species. Tests showed that the birds were poisoned, as officials suspected. What remains unsolved is who did it. One adult was on the nest, its bill, pointing to the left, barely visible or invisible through the nest rim. No other aduls were in sight. Patience can be rewarded. Observing during incubation is a bit like watching the grass grow. Three things can make it more interesting. The incubating adult may shift positions, standing up and often rotating 180 degrees about every 20-30 minutes. Another adult may be found roosting nearby on watch. Thirdly, the pair may exchange incubation duties. The latter action usually takes place a few times during the day, but the events can be 2-3 hours apart. Sometimes the incubating adult begins to move about and perhaps starts calling. When the mate arrives they may call together and there may be interesting interaction. We have sometimes seen the male (Pride) act as if he does not want to give up his duties and the female (Jewel) almost seems to push him out of the nest. At about 8:50 AM I was ready to depart when the eagle decided to change position: I almost missed the action, as it only took less than a minute. I am not sure whether this was the male or the female of the pair. I am guessing the male based upon the gape seeming not to reach very deep under the eye and one profile seems to show a low forehead. However its head seems quite large and rounded in the face-on view, resembling that of the female of this pair. Mary Lou and I immediately drove out to the nest site, where we found Jill, watching the nest, which was intact. Umberto joined us. Everything is fine, and it is clear that incubation is underway, with date of first egg quite uncertain. While we were there, a second adult flew over the nest and attacked a Turkey Vulture that had ventured tooo near. The two eagles called to each other, and we think that it was the incubating adult that stood up on the nest, briefly. It is possible (because of the limited visibility of the nest) , but doubtful, that the pair exchanged incubation duties. The second adult then settled down atop a melaleuca snag to the west of the nest. To my eye, the adult on the roost looked like a female, since its posterior abdomen was quite bulky. Of course, it is is next to impossible to distinguish the sexes, but the presumed male that I photographed had some dark markings on the tail. This bird appears to have a fully white tail (photos below). On 12/21/2010 1:49 PM, sara wrote: Dear Ken Schneider, my dad and I are here looking at the eagles nest in Pembroke Pines and it seems that someone has knocked down the nest and possibly the tree. So if you can, please send someone out here to double check. Please and thank you. Sincerely, Sara . My reply: Hi, Sara-- We went out and found that the tree and the nest are OK. One of the eagles is now sitting on eggs and is so low in the nest as to be invisible most of the time. While we were there, a second eagle flew over and then attacked a Turkey Vulture that had flown too close to the nest. The two eagles called to each other and the one on the nest stood up briefly. The second eagle then roosted in the dead trees to the west of the nest tree. The nest can now be very difficult to see, as the melaleuca trees in front of it have grown rapidly. If you park on the grass just to the side of the turning lane at the light, you may find a good spot, especially if you are tall. We really appreciate that you alerted us to a possible problem. I sometimes saw the top of a white head on the nest, but not many times and not for long at all. If you don't look constantly (until your arms are about to fall off from holding the binocs) you could easily think that there is not a bird up there. The eagle Ken described in the melaleuca tree stayed there and preened until 5 when all of a sudden the two eagles started communicating with each other. Right after that, one flew from the east (probably from the nest) and landed on a different dead tree. Then immediately, the one that had been there preening flew to the east (probably to the nest), but I could not see it in the nest, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. Very exciting! This was the same pattern I noted in my post on November 29 when I saw them mating. I presumed it was the male because after it mated on the nest, it flew to the roost while its mate stayed on the nest. I saw the one fly onto the radio tower near the dog park Sunday Morning [October 18] about 10:00 AM. That's how I came across this blog. I also saw the West Broward Eagles way back in 2008 before they had been made a big deal about. It was exciting I saw one of them flying over Pines Boulevard with a snake in its talons. I am wondering about the ones on the tower, where do you think they are from? My reply: This is interesting, as they had not been reported there since the end of July. We do not know where they may have been nesting, or whether they were newly paired up. Their presence last breeding season made us suspect that they might build a nest on the cell tower. So far a nest has not been located in that general area, but breeding season is getting underway and maybe someeone will see them carrying sticks to a nest site. Not sure whether we saw the third-- once there was some movement far to the left side, but it did not show upon the photo. Brown-tip suddenly appeared from the east and flew low in front of the nest, then circled, flew over the cow pasture, and lofted higher. circling very high up and disappeared to the south. There were no vocalizations between the pair. The fuzzy top of the second chick's head is just visible to the left of his big sister (I base the sex supposition solely on the fact that the first hatched is said to be somewhat more likely a female. If it is, in fact a male, any female eaglet will almost certainly be larger than the male before fledging. The size differential starts very early). Look closely at Brown-tip's tail. The feather with the dark tip is almost entirely worn down to its shaft. Dark feathers are more resistant to wear than white, so this is probably why the dark is persisting. The eaglet survived after its tree and nest fell in Kissimmee. It was just 2-3 days old and weighed only about 5 ounces. An attempt was made to use a platform in a nearby tree in hopes that the parents would raise the eaglet from that point forward. While that usually works, in this case the parents did not return. The backup plan was to place the eaglet in a nest with eaglets the same age. As luck would have it, PI20 in Dunedin was a match. Today, the 2 pound eaglet, nicknamed Hoover, was hoisted into the Dunedin nest. Jim Lott climbed the tree and took a photo and lowered the camera to Lynda who confirmed the match. The eaglet was put in a small sack and hoisted up to Jim who placed it in the nest with 2 siblings. Check the St. Petersburg Times tomorrow and Fox13 at 10 o'clock tonight for the photos and story!! It was amazing!!! We will forward more photos and links as they come in. Attached [above] is a photo from Andrea Webb and the other titled Hoover from Wendy Meehan. The eaglet was nicknamed Hoover because today is President's Day and Herbert Hoover was adopted by his uncle after losing his parents. More photos to follow. Everyone is just getting home and downloading the great shots they got. The parents did settle down into nearby pines but had not yet returned to the nest just before dark, although I'm confident they will, probably when no one is looking. At one point a Cooper's Hawk made a pass at the eaglets but was successfully chased off by the mature adult eagle. There were surprises, not all of them pleasant. First, our local Bald Eagles have hatched out at least one chick, now visible to many enthralled nest-watchers .. You may remember (as related in this earlier post) that in early November our son-in-law in Illinois suffered serious injuries to both legs in a fall from a tree stand while hunting deer in North Carolina. He was transported back home to Illinois and required extensive surgery. Now he is wheelchair bound but healing well and should be walking soon. One of his close relatives in the Miami area died suddenly during the first week of January and since he is unable to travel we planned to represent his family at the wake and funeral service. On Saturday, January 5 my friend and neighbor Scott, who regularly walks in our local wetlands area, Tweeted me with a photo taken by his daughter of a white crane, at the northern end of our local south Florida birding patch. On first glance I thought it might be an albino Sandhill Crane, but then realized that it was a juvenile Whooping Crane. The eBird data base contains no historical records of Whooping Crane sightings in either Broward County or Miami-Dade. The bird was in an area in which groups of off-road vehicle drivers assemble on weekend nights and conduct races. I was concerned that the crane could be disturbed. Scott was unavailable and Mary Lou and I had obligations that kept us from going out into the patch, so I posted the sighting on the Tropical Audubon Society Bird Board with a request that someone come out to monitor and help protect the crane. Several birders responded, and some of the ORV riders told them that they had been seeing TWO of the cranes in the area just north of our patch since December 22! The next morning we got out before sunrise and walked about a mile and a half, all the way north out of Miramar into the City of Pembroke Pines. After taking a few steps across the city limits I sighted two white dots in a wet prairie about a half mile away. We had to detour along a city street to avoid entering private land, but sure enough, we found the two Whooping Cranes. We learned from the website of the WHOOPING CRANE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP (WCEP) that these two first year Whooping Cranes (# 2012-13 and 2012-15) were among the six \"Direct Autumn Release\" (DAR) birds that migrated without the assistance of an ultralight aircraft. (See VIDEO and additional information at the end of this post). The six cranes, numbered 12 through 17, are identified by the arrangement of colored bands and transmitters on their left and right legs respectively. Cranes # 12 13 15 16 and 17 migrated south in record time. According to WCEP, they departed from the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin on 31 October. Satellite information indicated roost locations in Lawrence County, Indiana, on 31 October, then in Chester County, South Carolina, on 2 and 3 November where all five were also visually confirmed. Next they were located at Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Charleston County, South Carolina, on 4 November, and in Glynn County, Georgia on 5 November. Remarkably, in six days they had flown about 1200 miles unassisted, from Wisconsin to Clay County, Florida, by 6 November. They moved to Manatee County, Florida, on 7 November and into Everglades National Park, Monroe County, Florida, on 8 November and in Hendry County, Florida, on 9 November. Cranes # 12, 16 and 17 remained in Hendry County, Florida, at least through January 4, 2013 but they were no longer together. On 28 December, # 12 was reported as having a possible leg injury. The remaining crane #14 began migration with Sandhill Cranes from the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge more than three weeks behind the other five, on 23 November. Only 17 days later on 9 December, Crane # 14 was reported with sandhill cranes in Volusia County, Florida, where he remains. These two cranes # 13 and 15 moved from their Hendry County location to Broward County, Florida, on 22 December. Crane # 15, the one first photographed by my neighbor Scott is a male named Cypress. His band color pattern from top to bottom: left leg has a White/Green transmitter with antenna, and right leg has Green/Red/White bands: The other is Crane # 13, a female named Tussock. Her band color pattern from top to bottom: left leg has a Red/White transmitter with antenna, and right leg has a White/Green transmitter with antenna: I hoped to personally document their presence on our patch, so on Monday Mary Lou and I again went out before sunrise and walked northward the entire length of the patch. No cranes! She was not interested in slogging the muddy trails and returned home, while I hiked an additional three miles along several paths that border the wetlands and lake. Not finding the cranes, I headed for home. Just after entering our patch I ran into Brian Monk, another birder who was also searching for the cranes. I casually scanned the open areas with binoculars, and suddenly spotted one of the cranes. It was nearly a quarter of a mile away (actually 0.21 mile according to Google Earth), so my photo that documents the sighting is quite fuzzy. This is the male: As we continued south along the lake, Brian saw a white speck on the opposite shore, about 0.43 mile away. He gets credit for my opportunity to photograph the female: Brian and I were exploring an area where I saw both Swamp and Savannah Sparrows last week when Mary Lou called me at about 11:30 AM with news that our daughter in Illinois had fallen while carrying their Christmas tree down the stairs and had fractured bones in her ankle. Her husband is wheelchair-bound and she would need surgery. We were needed there to help them care for themselves and our two 7- and 8-year old granddaughters (not to mention two huge Tibetan Mastiffs and two large salt-water fish tanks). I rushed home and quickly made reservations. We packed and departed on a plane to Chicago at 3:30 PM, a quick transition from sub-tropical 84 degrees (F) to 12 degrees and blowing snow! Here they are, on Facebook. His open reductions required a metal plate, 10 screws, two pins and a cadaver bone transplant; She needed 13 screws, one metal plate, two pins, a washer and a wire, between them enough to keep a hardware store in business! <div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"> </div> By the way, Whooping Cranes in this population are not \"countable\" for listing purposes as officially established in the American Birding Association (ABA) area. The Ultralight-led Migration Project that began in 2001 utilizes eggs from captive breeding centers that are hatched at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland. The young cranes are later transferred to Wisconsin and trained to follow ultralight craft. After making their first migration to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge on Florida's west coast, they find their way back to Wisconsin alone and continue to migrate back and forth unassisted. A second method, called the Direct Autumn Release (DAR), was started in 2005. These cranes are raised by the ICF using attendants dressed in crane costumes. Kept from human contact, they are housed with adult Whooping Cranes to assure that they imprint properly. Before fledging, they are transferred to Wisconsin and finally to the release point at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. They learn to fly south by following the older cranes. We discussed our common concerns about the dangers to eagle nest watchers who gather along the south shoulder of the 20800 block of Pines Boulevard. The full text of the Steering Committee's position may be found at this link. The Committee requested that FDOT consider several measuers, including: 1. Placement of a temporary hard barrier along the south (eastbound) side of the highway, to separate pedestrians from vehicular traffic. 2. Improve “No Parking” signage so that the signs on the south side of the 20800 block of Pines Boulevard face oncoming traffic. 3. Add temporary warning traffic signs recommending that motorists exercise caution and reduce speed along that stretch of roadway during the months of January through May. 4. Develop, in cooperation with the City of Pembroke Pines, durable temporary signs that instruct pedestrian observers to utilize crosswalks at signal lights (at corners of 209th and 208th Avenues) and provide additional information to increase observer safety, such as advising pedestrians to stay off the shoulder or roadway, control children and pets, avoid littering, (etc). 5. Construction of a pedestrian sidewalk on the south side of the block, in view of the increased pedestrian traffic at all times of the year 6. Consultation with the City as to alternative parking areas other than the south side of the 20800 block of Pines Boulevard, such as use of side streets and soft road shoulders located on the FDOT right-of-way. Mr. Bogardus provided us with a report (view it at this link) of the meeting that summarizes FDOT's position. The good news is that it is clear that FDOT intends to institute measures to improve the safety of observers on the south side of the highway. The bad news is that the time frame for developing and implementing these measures means that such action will not be completed until after the 2011 nesting season. In the meantime, eagle nest observers (and all pedestrians) will be prohibited from entering the south side of Pines Boulevard. Further, there is no practical solution to the lack of safe and suitable parking. The following are key excerpts from Mr. Bogardus' report: FDOT stated that it does not wish to facilitate any pedestrian gathering on the south side of Pines Blvd due to safety concerns. Instead protective measures would focus on restricting pedestrians to the north side of Pines Blvd. where there is a sidewalk. The Department will post signs on the corner of 209th Avenue stating pedestrians must cross Pines Blvd. on 208th Avenue. No crosswalk exists on 209th Avenue. FDOT signage would be corrected to face oncoming traffic and additional signage would also be added including – “No Pedestrians” and “No Parking” on the south side of the road. FDOT does not wish to accommodate or encourage parking on its right of way along Pines Blvd due to safety concerns. The City has erected a fence to keep people from approaching the nest tree. However, the view near the fence is not ideal due to the dense forest. Instead people back up towards Pines Blvd. and the road island where the view is better, but dangerous to vehicle traffic. FDOT Planning and Environmental Management will coordinate with the design Project Manager, Henry Oaikhena to see if some type of viewing platform/elevated sidewalk can be incorporated into his Pines Blvd resurfacing project (construction is scheduled to begin in June 2011). A pedestrian sidewalk is planned for the south side of Pines Blvd. from US 27th to 208th Ave. The project timeframe is June 2011, depending on approval of environmental concerns (wetland & eagle) with the agencies (SFWMD, USFWS, and FWC). The Department’s plans for the sidewalk should be re-evaluated to see if any opportunities exist in terms of the eagles and pedestrian safety. = = = = = = = = = = = In summary, eagle nest observers will be restricted to the north side of Pines Boulevard for the next two breeding seasons. We expressed our disappointment that FDOT was unable to come up with a solution that was more accomodating to the needs of the many citizens who will surely continue to seek views of the birds during the peak observation season during the months of February through April. Veteran nest watchers probably share my belief that enforcement of the restrictions will place a burden upon local police. Volunteer watchers should not be expected enforce the traffic laws, but rather provide information to the public and notify the police department of any violations. I believe we should actively discourage media attention, as it has been very effective in increasing the numbers of observers. Until FDOT actually approves and implements these changes, provision of additional legal parking may actually worsen the situation.","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/FDOT-No-observation-of-nest-from-south-side-of-Pines-Boulevard-td3668573.html","images":0},{"id":"3671422","topic":"3668573","order":2,"title":"Re: FDOT: No observation of nest from south side of Pines Boulevard","author":"Mike Fossler","date":"2009-09-18T14:18:49.907000-04:00","nest":"","season":"","text":"People will gather on the south side and in the median as the nest/eagles are barely visible from the north sidewalk. They have made their point they cannot provide a permenant solution until 2011, and this is understood, but signage prohibiting standing along the south side should be discouraged. Signage something like \"Please use sidewalk on north side of road for your own safety - any pedestrian walking or standing along south side of roadway does so at his/her own risk\" would relieve FDOT from risk and take the burden of enforcement from the local PD. Since the sidewalk on the north side of the street is quite low, the nest may more likely be obscured by branches in front of it. To get a better view, people will tend to walk up the shoulder and stand very near the pavement-- nearer, in fact, than would be necessary on the south side. At least the road will be in front of them. On the north side, observers tended to back up toward the pavement. The issue with FDOT seems not be be whether it is safer for PEDESTRIANS, but rather that ANY barrier, whether a hard concrete \"Jersey barrier\" or a soft one like a plastic mesh fence strung between water barrels, is a hazard to the MOTORISTS. Even if room is left for a 10 foot shoulder, the barrier would cut down on the \"clear zone,\" as mentioned in the FDOT report of our meeting. (I think that refers to the wide area beyond the shoulder that allows vehicles a measure of safety in case of loss of control, but am not entirely certain). This video by CSX VP Bob O'Malley. The whole crew clearly cared what happened to the osprey. Look for the photos and story tomorrow in the St. Pete Times. Attached is an aerial view of the rr tracks in Safety Harbor. If you look you will see the rr crossing signal over the road. That is where the nest was! The land had been previously donated to the City of Safety Harbor. As I watched they flew between the branches and back and forth to the nest. No adults were in sight. They called quite a bit. I left after about 45 minutes. It was difficult to get a decent viewing angle, so this was about the best I could do: There was lots of wing flapping:","source":"http://bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com/JUN-4-Both-eaglets-at-nest-td7575571.html","images":4},{"id":"7574600","topic":"7574600","order":1,"title":"Here is another Fundrasier we now have 2 going","author":"Lisa G","date":"2016-11-20T11:01:29.948000-05:00","nest":"Pembroke Pines BO-002","season":"2016–2017","text":"Here is another Fundraiser we are running. I have only had the D500 for a few months now, I used a D7500 before that with the same lens and no teleconverter. The Teleconverter gives you an extra 1,4mm multiplier.
